Take a look at list of all the canonical names to restrict access to individual Control Panel items through group policy.

In this guide, you’ll find a list of all the Canonical Names of Control Panel Items. You can use these canonical names to show or hide specific control panel items for your users using the group policy.

Microsoft first introduced canonical names for Control Panel items with Windows Vista. Since then, every new client operating system launched has had the canonical names included. Basically, the canonical names are still applicable on Windows 10 and Windows 11.

In my guide on disabling the control panel access using group policy, I showed you how to use the canonical names to show or hide specific control panel items for users. Using Canonical Names in Local Group Policy is also permitted.

About Control Panel Canonical Names

When working with the canonical names of control panel items for group policies, you should be aware of the following:

  • The canonical names do not change based on the system language; they’re always in English, even if the system’s language is not.
  • Canonical names vary based on the operating system and the Windows edition. Not all Control Panel items are present in all editions of Windows.
  • Some Control Panel items only appear if the right hardware is detected on the system.
  • Third parties can also add Control Panel items. The canonical names listed in this guide are only for Control Panel items that are included with Windows.

Note: Microsoft deprecates certain control panel canonical names, and you won’t find those deprecated items in the control panel. The guide covers the canonical names for control panel items on Windows 11 and Windows 10 only.

Enable Windows Search Service on Windows Server

This article explains how to enable Windows search service on Windows server. The Windows Search service allows clients that are compatible with the search service to perform fast file searches on a server. When you install the Windows Search service on a server, you can use the Windows File Explorer to quickly search for files and file contents. The Windows Search service must be running to enable quick searching. The search service is also available for Windows 10 and Windows 11 users. This service provides content indexing, property caching, and search results for files, e-mail, and other content. On Windows 10/11, if you’re using Microsoft Visio to lookup for newly installed stencils, the Windows Search service should be running. Otherwise, you’ll encounter the error “Visio cannot provide fast search results because Windows Search is not running or is not configured properly for Visio. Please contact your system administrator.” http://staff.akkail.com/viewtopic.php?id=1727 http://s...
